Data Policy

Dear Faithful Donor:

We are writing to let you know, as a donor to programs and ministries within the Diocese of Brooklyn, about a data security incident that involved your personal information. The cybercriminal involved in the incident did not obtain any credit card account, bank account or social security number. We have no reason to believe your data was misused or made available publicly. This notice is for your information and you do not need to take any further action.

Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens maintains data for donors to Generations of Faith, Annual Catholic Appeal, Futures in Education (and its Catholic alumni program), Catholic Migration Services, Lawyers Conferences and other diocesan and parish programs in a database called Raiser’s Edge that is provided by Blackbaud, Inc. – a nationally recognized firm that services thousands of organizations.

On July 16, 2020, Blackbaud informed us that a cybercriminal accessed their system between February 7, 2020 and May 20, 2020 and obtained a backup copy of our database. The file removed contained:

  • Personal and/or Business Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Email Address and Phone Number
  • History of your giving to the aforementioned programs/organizations

In response to the cyberattack, Blackbaud paid the cybercriminal’s demand with confirmation that the copy removed had been destroyed. Based on the nature of the incident, their research, and third party (including law enforcement) investigation, we have no reason to believe that any data went beyond the cybercriminal, was or will be misused, or will be disseminated or otherwise made available publicly.

Unfortunately, we are living in a time when cyberattacks such as this one and subsequent scams have become too commonplace. It is important for all of us to remain vigilant. Always confirm the source of any request for a payment or a gift. We encourage you to click the direct links below to make future donations securely and up to date information on things we continue to do to keep data safe and private. You may also call us at (718) 965-7375 or info@cfbq.org if you have any questions or would like to further discuss.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity, especially during this tumultuous time. The impact of your gift is so significant in light of the needs created by the COVID-19 crisis. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if we can help alleviate any concerns you may have.

In Christ’s Peace,

Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello                                 John Notaro
Vicar for Development                                     Executive Director
